Buzzy James
John “Buzzy” James, 91, passed away peacefully at his home in Palm Desert, California, on January 28, 2026. Loved by all who knew him, Buzzy will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, dedication to service, and unwavering commitment to helping others. He had a contagious laugh, was always there for his friends and family, and took great joy in the life he built in his beloved community of Avondale.
Growing up along the beaches of California, Buzzy admired the lifeguards and the courage and dedication they showed in keeping others safe. In 1951, he was thrilled to land his first job as a lifeguard at a local swimming pool. What began as a summer job soon became a lifelong calling. In 1952 he passed the rigorous Los Angeles County beach lifeguard exam, and by 1954 he became a permanent beach lifeguard for Los Angeles County.
Buzzy’s 35-year career with the county was marked by innovation, leadership, and service. In 1960 he organized and developed the county’s first Underwater Recovery Team, a pioneering unit that responded to numerous underwater accidents throughout Los Angeles County and across the state of California. He later earned his U.S. Coast Guard Skipper’s License and served as Rescue Boat Skipper for the Redondo Beach Baywatch. From 1962 to 1965 he served as Relief Skipper assigned to Catalina Island.
In 1965 Buzzy was promoted to Lieutenant at the South Bay Lifeguard Headquarters, where he held a variety of leadership responsibilities. He was appointed Diving Officer, overseeing dive training and operations, and served as a member of the Los Angeles County Underwater Accident Investigation Committee. Buzzy was also proud to serve as the department’s first Paramedic Coordinator, helping organize and establish paramedic services at Zuma Beach and Catalina Island. After 35 years of dedicated service protecting the citizens of Los Angeles County, he retired with great pride in the work he had accomplished.
Following his retirement, Buzzy moved to Palm Desert where he met and fell in love with Kathy Hite James. The two married and built a wonderful life together in the Avondale community. They loved playing golf, attending social events, and forming many lifelong friendships.
